Alien
1979
Ridley Scott
Aliens, Must-See, Original, Scary
This horror movie set in space is a must-see masterpiece.
Although this film came out at the end of the 70's, the acting and special effects are very 80’s, in a good way (it was a different time without CGI).
The star is the INCREDIBLE sets and ground breaking special effects that rival Star Wars (came out around the same time), the Alien looks out of this world.
Fun fact: H.R. Giger was detained by Dutch customs because his designs for the alien were so grotesque that they thought he was carrying disturbing material, and while filming certain scenes the crew fainted because it was so disturbing.
We love the world building in this film, its such a cool story, and you get to see more in the sequel.
The lead of this franchise, Sigourney Weaver, also shines with an outstanding performance, giving us one of our first bad*ss female heroes in film history;
There are definitely some disturbing and nail biting scenes, great gore, but the film is more high on suspense and fear, and lower on scare factor.
It is really fascinating to see how people in this time imagined how future technology and space travel would look.
The film explores themes of corporate greed, the fear of the unknown, and the instinct to survive.
There are 8 sequels in this franchise, we recommend watching the first sequel; the other sequels don't achieve the same greatness, but you still may want to watch them at your own risk (can't be unseen).
Features Sigourney Weaver, John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton, Yaphet Kotto, Ian Holm, Veronica Cartwright, Tom Skerritt, and Boladji Badejo as the alien.
