Blood Quantum
2020
Jeff Barnaby
Zombies, Scary
This unique Zombie flick is set on the Red Crow Mi’kmaq reservation and is part of a recent wave of indigenous films and culture in Canada as the country deals with Reconciliation and amplifies the voices of it's Native citizens.
The title 'Blood Quantum' refers to a controversial colonial policy used to determine Indigenous identity based on the percentage of one’s Indigenous ancestry.
The film cleverly uses the zombie apocalypse as a metaphor for colonialism and the historical injustices faced by Indigenous peoples; this layer of social commentary adds depth and relevance to the horror elements.
Although the film was released in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was not intended to be a commentary on the pandemic, but it became one due to the parallels of what was happening at the time.
The practical effects and makeup are impressive, delivering plenty of gore and visceral horror that fans of the genre will appreciate.
It’s refreshing to see a horror film centered on Indigenous characters and culture, offering a perspective that is often underrepresented in mainstream cinema.
There are some problems with pacing and we wish we got more character development, but overall this film is a good addition to the Zombie sub-genre, even if it is somewhat forgettable.
