Candyman
2021
Nia DaCosta
Paranormal, Sequel, Slasher, Avant-Garde, Scary
This sequel to the 90’s original brings this story inspired by a real murder and folktale from Chicago to a new audience.
We really have Black Excellence here, mostly black cast, black female director, and famed Jordan Peele on as a writer.
Whereas the original is a bloody and terrifying slasher, this sequel strikes more of a chilling psychological thriller tone (also has blood and slashing), we would call this a bit of a “requel”.
Excellent atmosphere, makeup, and CGI.
Back story to understand: the Candyman was brutally murdered for having an interracial love affair, pay attention to shadow puppet show.
We do recommend that you watch the original film first, but this film can also stand on its own.
We bet you will be scared of mirrors for a few days after this film, or maybe you will say it five times?
Bonus: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II gives us some great eye candy.
Features Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, Kyle Kaminsky, Vanessa Williams, and others.
