This isn't the first horror movie with a creepy psychotic Doll, but it definitely was the first wildly successful film at the box office and is the most well-known to this day, spawning a franchise, and for that reason it is a must-see classic.
The film is a very fun and suspenseful thrill ride, albeit cheesy and predictable.
Spoiler for clarity: it's not quite clear how the doll comes to life, apparently it was a voodoo ritual that transferred the soul into the doll, and that's why we have tagged this film with witchcraft.
We get lots of great 80's nostalgia in this film, we love how none of the furniture in the home will catch on fire because it would have been absolutely coated in toxic fire retardants that are banned today.
The doll was likely inspired by the extreme popularity of dolls at the time like 'Cabbage Patch Kids' and 'My Buddy' which kids begged their parents for.
The acting, and special effects are great, and there is definitely a great atmosphere of urban and social decay, although we could have done without the racial undertones in some scenes.
There are some good scares but overall the film is probably not gonna terrify you unless you have a serious fear of dolls.
There are 6 sequels and a remake, all of which we recommend watching if you enjoyed this original.
Features Catherine Hicks, Chris Sarandon, Alex Vincent, Dinah Manoff, the voice of Brad Dourif, and others.
